World of Warcraft hits 11m subscribers

Blizzard's MMO continues to grow ahead of new expansion's release

Blizzard has announced that there are now more than 11 million subscribers to World of Warcraft.

This represents an increase of 100,000 users on the last recorded figure. While not as big an increase in subscribers as previously announced milestones, this comes in spite of the release of two MMOs billed as rivals, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures and Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

"It's been very rewarding to see gamers around the world continue to show such strong support for World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment.

"We remain fully committed to responding to that enthusiasm with a high-quality, constantly evolving game experience."

This news comes just weeks before the MMO's second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, sees its release on November 13.
