Vertigo Games claims VR sales record with $1.4m Arizona Sunshine haul

First month sales are the highest for a PC VR title, developer claims

Vertigo Games' Arizona Sunshine earned $1.4 million in its first month on sale, which its developer believes is a new record for a standalone PC VR title.

Arizona Sunshine, which was co-developed with Jaywalkers Interactive, launched for both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive on December 6, 2016. Vertigo Games has confirmed that it made $1.4 million in revenue by January 5 this year, with each unit selling for around $40.

In a statement sent to Upload VR, Vertigo's managing director, Richard Stitselaar, said "from what we can tell, it may be the fastest selling non-bundled PC VR title to date."

It should be noted that Survios' Raw Data made $1 million in a month last September, and it did so despite only being available for a HTC Vive. Earlier this month, Owlchemy Labs revealed that Job Simulator had passed $3 million in sales, thanks in part to its release for PlayStation VR.

Bundled vs. non-bundled, Vive vs. Rift, PC vs. console vs. mobile; at this point, there are too many platforms and too little hard data to be 100% confident in any claim of a single VR title being the most successful. However, Arizona Sunshine's early performance is another welcome indicator that the best VR games are starting to make money.

At the close of last year, RocketWerkz CEO Dean Hall suggested that, for the majority of developers working in VR, that is certainly not the case. "There is no money in it," he said. "I don't mean 'money to go buy a Ferrari'. I mean 'money to make payroll'."
