Subway Surfers becomes first Android game to pass 1bn downloads
Sybo and Kiloo's mobile hit achieves new milestone after outperforming all other games last year
Endless runner Subway Surfers has been downloaded more than one billion times on Google Play - making it the first Android title to do so.
Danish developer Sybo and mobile publisher Kiloo Games report that the milestone follows a hugely successful 2017, in which the game achieved more worldwide downloads than any other mobile title.
In fact, Subway Surfers achieved its highest number of downloads within a year, with more than 400 million 'mostly organic' installs, according to an official release.
The game was first launched in May 2012. Marketing for the title has continued through the Subway Surfers World Tour, an initiative that has seen promotional activity through 79 events around the globe.
Sybo is also keen to expand on the brand, with animated short films in the works for 2018.
"We have really achieved greatness by combining our strengths at Sybo and Kiloo," says CEO Mathias Gredal Noervig. "The continued growth of the game and brand is our focus, and we are excited about future releases, and the animated short films that are launching later this year. The players will have even more great content to consume."
It's not all been plain sailing for Sybo and Kiloo. Both firms ended up in court last year after alleged misuse of children's data.
