Steam Link is now in beta for Raspberry Pi

Micro-computer costs less to buy than the now discontinued Steam Link hardware

Steam Link is now in beta for the Raspberry Pi micro-computer, offering a keenly priced alternative to Valve's now discontinued streaming hardware.

The new Steam Link app runs on Raspberry Pi 3 and Raspberry Pi 3 B+, both of which are available for around $35. When Valve's Steam Link hardware was available, it sold for around $50.

Launched in 2015, Steam Link allowed games to be streamed from a PC to a television over a WiFi network. However, despite that compelling use-case and a relatively low price-point, the dedicated Steam Link hardware didn't prove popular enough to survive.

Last month, Valve confirmed in a blog post that the remaining Steam Link hardware would be the last ever produced. It will continue to support Steam Link through software for mobiles, tablets and smart televisions.

The Raspberry Pi, though, with its low price-point, could serve as an effective substitute for the hardware when the final units have been sold.
