Online sources are reporting that as many as 70 employees at Vivendi Universal Games have been laid off in the past week, following the announcement of another poor set of quarterly results for the division.

Online sources are reporting that as many as 70 employees at Vivendi Universal Games have been laid off in the past week, following the announcement of another poor set of quarterly results for the division.

The cutbacks are thought to affect all departments within the company, and are designed as a cost-saving measure in the wake of the â'¬58 million loss posted at the start of this month.

No official statement regarding the redundancies has yet been made, although US news site GameSpot reports that the company has confirmed the news privately. The affected employees were apparently informed last week.

It's not known whether these staff cutbacks are part of the wider package of measures being implemented by VU Games in an attempt to return to profitability next year, or if they are an emergency response to the massive losses in the last quarter - which are expected to continue through into this quarter as well.
