Providing the forest cover in America's Army 3.

COLUMBIA, SC – SpeedTree® has been chosen by the America’s Army® project for inclusion in America’s Army 3, the latest version of the U.S. Army’s hit game series. The America’s Army games provide players a virtual portal into the Army, from exploring the development of Soldiers in individual and collective training to their employment in simulated missions in the Global War on Terrorism.

"In America's Army 3, authenticity is very important, especially for outdoor environments," said Michael Barnett, Chief Engineer for the America's Army program. "With SpeedTree, we can quickly create a variety of trees, shrubs, grass and other foliage that are naturally lit and move with the wind or other external forces like the rotor wash of a low flying Blackhawk."

Barnett added that SpeedTree will be used to create larger, more immersive environments with dense forests for the public game and in non-public America's Army Government applications used for training, simulation, education, virtual prototyping and outreach.

“Inclusion in America’s Army 3 and in the Army’s non-public simulations, is noteworthy as it confirms SpeedTree’s value not just as an entertainment product, but as a technology that meets the standards of realism required for extremely serious purposes,” said IDV CEO Chris King.

Launched in July 2002, America’s Army has become one of the world’s most popular computer game franchises. Embraced by pop culture, America’s Army is one of the most recognizable game brands as a result of its unique inside perspective on the U.S. Army and exciting gameplay.

About America’s Army

The Army creates and distributes America’s Army so that young Americans can virtually explore Soldiering in the U.S. Army like Soldiers experience it – as individuals and as members of teams. Through the Game’s virtual experiences, young Americans can explore the Army from basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and medic training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, to operations in defense of freedom. Along the way, they can join elite Army units and experience the strength of Army teamwork, values, and technology within an engaging environment. The game has become an online phenomenon, consistently ranking among the most popular PC action games played online. The games are rated T for Teen and can be downloaded free from Steam ( and from various partners listed on the website. They are also distributed at local Army Recruiting stations, ROTC Detachments, and Army events.

In the America's Army game, players are bound by Rules of Engagement (ROE) and grow in experience as they navigate challenges in team-based, multiplayer, force-on-force operations. In the game, as in the Army, accomplishing missions requires teamwork and adherence to the Army’s core Values. Through its emphasis on team play, the game demonstrates these Values of Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage and makes them integral to success in America's Army.

The Army launched America’s Army in July of 2002, and has released major updates to the game every few months. These releases feature new technologies, missions, Army units, and occupations. In keeping with the dynamic nature of Soldiering, the America's Army game will continue to expand and allow players to explore the Army of today, tomorrow and the future. The most recent version of the game, America’s Army 3, launched in June 2009.
