Sony set to unveil PSX this week

The latest addition to the PlayStation product family, a hybrid console and home entertainment centre called PSX, will be shown off publicly for the first time at a technology show in Japan this week.

The latest addition to the PlayStation product family, a hybrid console and home entertainment centre called PSX, will be shown off publicly for the first time at a technology show in Japan this week.

The device is a PlayStation 2 at heart, but adds a TV tuner, DVD recorder and80gb hard disc drive into the bundle as well - enabling digital video recording and music playback on the system, which is packaged attractively in a silver casing.

PSX has been described as Sony's "stealth console", an effort to get the PlayStation hardware into the living rooms of people who would be unlikely to welcome a dedicated console under their television.

It's expected that exact date and pricing details for the console in Japan will be announced at the CEATEC Japan 2003 show tomorrow. The European and US release for the hardware is stated as early 2004 at present, but no further details have been made available.
