SNK readies NeoGeo mini

Retro console will include 40 games with built-in arcade stick and 3.5-inch screen, HDMI-out, and controller ports

Everything old is new again. SNK is the latest vintage console maker to announce its own plug-and-play throwback console, as the company today revealed the NeoGeo mini.

Marking the 40th anniversary of the SNK brand, the NeoGeo mini will include 40 games from the home/arcade hybrid platform that debuted in 1990. The hardware is shaped like a miniature arcade machine, and will come in two different designs, depending on the market. Japanese gamers will see a black, white, and red color scheme that mimics the original NeoGeo cabinets released in that country, while the rest of the world gets a new black, white, and blue motif.

Specific titles haven't been detailed yet, but promotional artwork for the international version shows games like Metal Slug 2, Samurai Shodown II, Real Bout Fatal Fury, and King of Fighters '97. Artwork for the Japanese edition of the hardware includes Metal Slug, Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, Samurai Shodown V Special, and King of Fighters '98.

The base hardware of both versions will include a 3.5-inch screen, as well as a headphone jack, built-in arcade stick, and buttons. However, it will also include an HDMI port so users can play the games on a TV, and two controller ports.

No pricing or release date was announced. Details about compatible controllers were similarly left for future announcements.
