14 January 2009 Blitz Games Studios has signed up Project Aftermath, the PAX10 winning Arcade RTS game by indie developers Games Faction, under its Blitz Arcade 1>UP initiative.
Dubbed a “cool indie arcade [game] that you really should look at” by Jim Rossignol, Rockpapershotgun.com, Project Aftermath is a squad-based RTS set in a retro-futuristic world. Released in October 2008 and available from Steam and gamesfaction.com, it’s gone down a storm with critics, with an overall score of 75 on metacritic.com boosting the game substantially.
Command up to four squads of soldiers in a post-apocalyptic world where your enemy has destroyed everything you hold dear. Fight in massive battles against the hordes and use all the weapons and genetic powers at your disposal to eradicate the enemy.
The game rests on a points system – you pick up GOOP (fuel you need to run your ships/power your weapons/generally do everything) for finishing off your enemies and achieving objectives and spend them to use special powers. Equip your squads to suit your style and choose from over 100 weapons.
With only three people to make the entire game, Games Faction took on a mighty task and shed blood, sweat and tears to create Project Aftermath from scratch, without compromising their vision. It may have taken two years but it was worth it for Lee Hickey and Malcolm Reed, both ex-Deep Red Games.
“We actually built our own engine so we could build it exactly how we wanted. Our main objective was to keep the tech pretty simple to make sure it works on a large number of machines.” says Lee Hickey, Game Faction’s Managing Director. “We’re really happy with the final result and the critics’ reactions. While the game is currently available to download from a few portals, we’re really happy to be teaming up with Blitz 1>UP to gain additional exposure and help to maximise worldwide distribution.”
Adds Chris Swan, Blitz Arcade business development director: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Games Faction and their excellent title. The team have made a tremendous job in creating such a high-quality and accessible RTS title, and it’s an honour to be helping them to maximise its success.”
