PlayStation phone "plausible" says Sony exec

Sony has stated that a PlayStation branded mobile phone is a plausibility, as the company continues its close relationship with Sony Ericsson.

Earlier this year, Sony Ericsson also said that such a device was "an area of possible future activity," following the release of a Sony Bravia branded mobile phone in Japan.

"The PlayStation is a proven success and so is Sony Ericsson. Convergence with the two arms working together is definitely plausible," said SCE co-chief operating officer Jim Ryan, in an interview with the Economic Times.

Sony Ericsson has already used the Walkman and CyberShot brands in mobile phones, but any gaming capabilities in a PlayStation handset would need to be technically balanced with the demands of a communication device.

"What has been done is finding a match between a camera and a mobile phone, and that has been done wherein the mobile phone features are not reasonably inhibited and the camera is also a reasonably competitive product," said Ryan.

"It is hugely intellectually seductive to have a console-oriented phone."

Sony has recently struck a deal with BT in Europe to offer phone, text and video calls from the PlayStation Portable using VoIP technology, although no fixed launch date for the service has been announced.
