Official PlayStation Magazine re-launches as Play

Long-running UK periodical retired as editorial staff starts over from issue 1; subscriptions carried over automatically

After 25 years, the UK's Official PlayStation Magazine has been retired, with Future Publishing replacing it with Play, a new publication with the same editorial team but without the official Sony branding.

Play editor Ian Dean announced the news on Future's site GamesRadar Friday.

"Our aim is for Play to go farther and deeper than ever before into the world of PlayStation gaming," Dean said.

"And crucially, it's made by the same team of writers, editors, and designers, with the same deep industry access, quality of writing, and passion for all things PlayStation."

An accompanying FAQ about the move charcterized the split as mutual, saying, "All good things come to an end, and along with Sony we felt that the Official PlayStation Magazine had finally earned a well-deserved retirement."

The first issue of Play launches this week and features Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on the cover.

While issue numbers are resetting, the reader base will stay at least partially intact, as all Official PlayStation Magazine subscriptions are being automatically moved over to Play subscriptions.
