Research specialist NPD is to begin publishing quarterly reports addressing online subscription-based games.

The company says that through 3 million consumers it will gather data ranging from market size and competing pricing models, to specific game details and user profiles.

"These new additions to NPD's portfolio of products provide manufacturers, retailers, licensors, publishers, developers, and financial services companies with the ability to track the size, growth and demographics of the US market for subscription-based games and software," commented Martin Zagorsek, vice president of the NPD Group.

"These products are an important step towards NPD's ultimate goal of providing a truly complete view of the North American PC game and video game markets, including all of the different ways consumers pay for and play video games, PC games, and related products," added Zagorsek.

NPD already produces detailed monthly stats on the videogame market in the US, with its research often cited by all leading publishers and platform holders.
