Nintendo planning new Switch for 2019 - Report

Wall Street Journal says an improved model is set for late next year

Nintendo will release an updated version of its Nintendo Switch console next year, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The business newspaper says that the upgrade may feature an improved LCD screen, but that an OLED screen is not being considered as the objective is to make the device 'brighter, thinner and more energy efficient'.

The new model is designed to maintain momentum for the console, which has faltered slightly in 2018. Although sales remain very strong, Switch isn't surprising the market in the same way it did during its launch year.

The new upgrade is reportedly scheduled for late 2019.

Nintendo has a reputation for upgrading its portable hardware. There have been six variations of the 3DS (3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, 2DS and New 2DS XL), 4 variations of the DS (DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL) and three Game Boy Advance models (GBA, GBA SP and GB Micro). However, unlike Sony and Microsoft, it doesn't upgrade its home consoles quite so frequently.

Nintendo has been proactive in setting out its stall for 2019 for Switch, with games such as Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Luigi's Mansion 3, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, New Super Mario Bros and Yoshi's Crafted World due next year.
