Mike Nichols appointment

Former Project Natal man joins gesture recognition outfit Softkinetic.

SAN FRANCISCO - March 10, 2010

Softkinetic, the leading 3D gesture recognition software provider, today announced that they have hired Mike Nichols to lead the expansion of media and content development activities for the company, including its wholly owned game development subsidiary, Softkinetic Studios. Nichols will oversee the design, development and production of commercial gesture-based games for 3D cameras and imaging technology. He joins a team of experienced video game professionals that includes technical director Cyrille Wagner, who brings 10 years of experience as lead programmer and R&D engineer at companies including Atari and Playlogic, and art director Michael Defroyennes, who brings 20 years of experience as art director at 10tacle Studios.

“Mike Nichols will be a tremendous asset to the Softkinetic group of companies,” said Michel Tombroff, chief executive officer, Softkinetic. “His extensive understanding of the 3D gesture-recognition space will be invaluable to us as we continue to pioneer innovations in delivering interactive entertainment for this dramatically expanding industry.”

Nichols brings over 20 years of production, business and creative leadership experience in the video game industry to Softkinetic. Most recently, Nichols was executive producer for Project Natal at Microsoft Game Studios (MGS), for which he was responsible for developing and driving the project roadmap, evangelizing Project Natal (both internally and to first-party partners) as well as overseeing the management of Project Natal-based games at Rare and Lionhead Studios. Prior to MGS, Mike was a co-founder of Surreal Software, and served as a creative and art director for companies including Midway and Sierra Online.

“I am incredibly pleased to join the team at Softkinetic, and to develop games on the frontier of this new wave of interactivity,” declared Mike Nichols. “Our industry continues to evolve as opportunities for interactive entertainment expand beyond traditional consoles and PC experiences, and we have a huge opportunity to shape the future of this exciting technology and the quality of the entertainment experiences it can offer.”
