Microsoft launches $1m #givewithXbox charity campaign

Initiative will support Child's Play, Gamers Outreach, SpecialEffect and Operation Supply Drop

Microsoft has launched a #givewithXbox Christmas charity campaign.

The platform holder is urging fans to share photos on social media of what gaming together means using that hashtag.

The firm will donate $5 of Xbox products - rising to $1 million - for every photo shared. The donations will be split between the charities Child's Play, Gamers Outreach, SpecialEffect and Operation Supply Drop.

Child's Play was set-up by the team behind Penny Arcade and donates toys and games to children's hospitals worldwide. Gamers Outreach provides recreation to children in hospitals through video games, providing equipment, technology and software that help kids cope with long-term treatment. SpecialEffect is a UK based charity which uses video games to enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities (including creating special controllers to help disabled players enjoy games). Finally, Operation Supply Drop sends gaming care packages to US troops deployed around the world, to help them transition back to civilian life.

The campaign is set to run over the holiday period.
