Madmind Studio cancels Agony Unrated

Developer "struggling with financial problems" reneges on promise of unrated re-release

Madmind Studio has been forced to cancel the unrated re-release of its survival horror debut, Agony.

In a post on the Steam community forums, the developer said it was "currently struggling with financial problems" and would be cancelling development of Agony Unrated.

"Due to technical and legal reasons, Madmind must cancel the development of Agony Unrated," said the developer. "Part of the team will continue to support Agony on Steam and consoles by publishing new patches."

Agony was funded on Kickstarter in December 2016 to the tune of CA$ 182,642.

The Polish studio's first game, it was met with fairly harsh critical reception when it released in May this year.

However, as a game brimming with sex and violence, Madmind also promised an unrated version in an effort to compensate for what some backers considered to be a disappointing Kickstarter investment.

Madmind's decision to cancel the unrated version was met with the sort of vitriol that is no longer surprising in the games industry; consumers responded by review-bombing the game, demanding refunds, and threatening legal action.
