Konami net income climbs 90 per cent

Unit sales jump 49 per cent off back of Metal Gear Solid 4 release

Konami has reported its consolidated financial results for the six months ended September 30, revealing a sharp increase in unit sales by over 49 per cent and a climb in net income by 90 per cent.

The company saw its net revenue climb to JPY 146.9 billion (USD 1.5 billion), compared to JPY 133.7 billion (USD 1.3 billion) year-on-year, and its net income reached JPY 12 billion (USD 123 million), up from JPY 6.3 billion (USD 63.6 million)for the same period last year.

Konami's net revenue and operating income for its computer and videogames segment rose by 67 per cent to JPY 41.9 billion, from JPY 28.3 billion the previous year.

In the six month period which saw the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, Konami's unit sales jumped to 11.75 million units, from 7.84 million for the same period the previous year. Of the rise in units, 97 per cent was accounted for by an increase in sales of MGS 4.

As a consequence of the PlayStation 3 exclusive title's success, sales on Sony's console rocketed up from 1 per cent the previous year to 38 per cent.

Sales in North America climbed from 1.16 million units the previous year to 4.05 million units, and in Europe from 2.06 million to 3.49 million. However, unit sales fell in Japan from 4.57 million to 4.05 million units.
