Katamari creator not rolled up by Revolution controller

Japanese game designer Keita Takahashi, creator of cult hit Katamari Damacy, has expressed reservations regarding Nintendo's new controller for the Revolution console - and stated that he's "not really interested" in developing for it at present.

Speaking with Game Developer magazine, Takahashi commented that "I don't think a controller should have that much influence on the enjoyment of games," and explained that "there's nothing I really want to do with it right now."

His remarks run contrary to the wide praise which the controller has received from many other game developers, both in the east and in the west - but they're hardly out of character for the quirky game creator, who has been outspoken in the past in his criticism of many aspects of the game development industry.

Indeed, Nintendo has come into his firing line before - with Takahashi expressing very similar reservations about the control system for the Nintendo DS when he spoke to GamesIndustry.biz last year.

"My feeling is that the touch screen on the DS is just not exciting enough," he told us at the time. "I feel that there's still something missing from that."

The full interview with Keita Takahashi will appear in the next issue of Game Developer magazine. Meanwhile, if you missed it at the time, you can click here to read our exclusive interview with Takahashi and report on his keynote at GDCE last year.
