Japan Charts: Square Enix' Final Fantasy remakes take the top spot

The Game Boy Advance remake of Final Fantasy I and II has taken the top spot in the Japanese software charts, selling almost 150,000 units and displacing Nintendo's Paper Mario RPG after only a week at number one.

The Game Boy Advance remake of Final Fantasy I and II has taken the top spot in the Japanese software charts, selling almost 150,000 units and displacing Nintendo's Paper Mario RPG after only a week at number one.

Unlike Nintendo's recent success with the Famicom Mini budget range (released elsewhere as the NES Classics range), however, the remake of Square's NES titles has been sold as a full-price game.

Final Fantasy I & II Advance is the only title to break the 100,000 sales mark this week, but a number of other new releases also made it into the top ten - including Bandai's anime-based One Piece - Round The Land! action title and Arika's PS2 RPG The Nightmare of Druaga, which sold 49,000 and 43,000 units respectively.

Sammy's Guilty Gear Isuka - an update to the hugely popular 2D beat 'em up which adds a four player mode among other enhancements - came in at number five, while Konami's Power Pro-kun Pocket 1&2 title on the GBA completed the line-up of new releases, at number six.

Paper Mario RPG dropped only one place in this week's ranking, and continued to sell strongly at number two - but former number one title Jikkyo Power Pro Baseball 11 slipped down to number seven this week, with sales for the title declining rapidly.

In hardware terms, the Game Boy Advance took the lead from the PlayStation 2 by a tiny margin this week - with 43.9 per cent market share, compared with 43.54 per cent for the PS2. The GameCube improved its standing significantly, with just shy of 12 per cent market share overall.
