The latest in Namco's popular series of flight combat simulators, Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, has gone in at number one in the Japanese sales charts, racking up around 173,000 sales in its first weekend at retail.

The latest in Namco's popular series of flight combat simulators, Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, has gone in at number one in the Japanese sales charts, racking up around 173,000 sales in its first weekend at retail.

Although it's unquestionably a strong start for the title, it's actually a little behind the performance of the previous title in the series, Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies, which sold around 210,000 in the same period.

The remainder of the chart sees a considerable decline over last week as the autumn slump continues, with only the success of Ace Combat lifting overall sales by around four per cent.

Two new entries make it into the top ten alongside Unsung War, with Nippon Ichi's La Pucelle 2 coming in at number five and Capcom's tie-in title to Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, Oogie's Revenge, at number eight, although neither manage particularly strong sales figures.

Nintendo's Mawaru Made In Wario is at number two this week, with Pokemon Emerald at number three making it two at the top for the Game Boy Advance, while EA's Burnout 3: Takedown continues to perform well for an overseas-developed title, at number six this week.

In hardware terms, the Game Boy Advance is still the one to beat, with around 56 per cent market share compared with 36 per cent for the PS2 and just shy of 7.5 per cent for the GameCube.
