iOS developers have made $100 billion since App Store launched

20 million companies now registered as developers for Apple's mobile platform

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the opportunity at WWDC to reveal the latest milestones achieved by iOS since the App Store first opened ten years ago.

Speaking at the firm's annual conference, as reported by TechCrunch, the exec revealed that the store's catalogue has generated $100 billion in revenues - and that's the money that has gone specifically to the developers.

This $100 billion has been spread across 20 million registered iOS developers, although obviously certain studios will be taking a heftier share of this than others. While not specified, it's a safe bet the likes of Supercell, King, MZ and other mobile games powerhouses account for a significant amount of this revenue.

In fact, despite Cook not elaborating on how this money is divided between the various app categories, it's almost certain that the majority has gone to games developers.

A recent report by App Annie revealed that games represent 75 per cent of consumer spend on iOS - even though they generate less than a third of the downloads.

Back at WWDC, Cook also revealed the App Store brings in 500 million visitors every week, demonstrating just how large the potential audience for mobile games can be.

The CEO also noted that Apple's programming language, Swift, is the "fastest growing" of its kind, with over 350,000 apps now written with this form of code.
