For immediate release: Friday 5 November

Free workshops to improve people’s chances of getting employment in the digital industries are being offered to young people, individuals in training programmes and the unemployed as part of the NEoN digital arts festival.

A full day of free events will be held next Saturday (13 November) at the University of Abertay Dundee. Sessions will be held in digital technologies, web design, animation and illustration, and online journalism.

The workshops provide the perfect platform to learn from professionals working within these fields, seek career advice and discover opportunities within an ever-expanding sector.

Everyone attending gets to take part in two of the four workshops, as well as a session on preparing a CV and a professional portfolio. The flexibility of the day will help people looking for work to really boost their skills.

Places are limited, so people are strongly encouraged to register as soon as possible by calling 01382 308324 or emailing exhibitions@abertay.ac.uk

Clare Brennan, NEoN workshops organiser and Assistant Cultural Projects Officer at Abertay University, said: “Dundee has a vibrant and exciting digital and creative sector, and this event will help the unemployed and others looking to improve their skills get a first step into these important industries.

“Abertay is very proud to be hosting these events as part of the NEoN digital arts festival. Everyone who takes part will get to learn directly from industry professionals, which is a really fantastic opportunity.

“We’re expecting a lot of interest in these events, so I’d encourage people to sign up as soon as possible to make sure they get a place.”

Workshops are free and open to the unemployed (all ages), young people (16+) and those in training programmes. They are aimed at those who have some or no qualifications in this area and are looking for an introduction to the digital and creative industries.

Participants will also get the chance to learn about their education options, to improve their employability further.

Places are limited, so people are strongly encouraged to register as soon as possible by calling 01382 308324 or emailing exhibitions@abertay.ac.uk

NOTES FOR EDITORS

North East of North (NEoN) is an international digital arts festival featuring moving image, performance, music and technology driven arts. The overarching curatorial theme for 2010 is ‘character’: evaluating the abstracted or physical agent in a work of art; investigation of the fictional or psychological systems; observation of the unit of information, symbol, sound or written language.

Through this focused dimension NEoN intends to explore the notion of collaboration between visual art, information communication, media production and gaming that will expand digital development and knowledge. http://www.northeastofnorth.com/
