Instinct Supports Daring Students

Emerging game development technology provider supplies creative tools and support to participants in annual international game development competition for students

June 22nd 2006

Next-generation software tools provider Instinct Technology has shown its support for another 'next generation', the game developers of the future, by making its Instinct Studio technology available free-of-charge to students taking part in this year's 'Dare To Be Digital' game design competition.

Dare To Be Digital (www.daretobedigital.co.uk), organised and run by the University of Abertay, is an annual video games development competition for students attending Universities and Colleges of Art. Founded in 2000, the competition has grown into a truly international affair, with this year's event attracting entries from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Canada, as well as from across the UK.

The competition sees teams of six students (each a mix of artists and programmers) assemble in Dundee for ten weeks to develop a prototype video game. Throughout this time, the students receive daily support and weekly training sessions from industry specialists. Those teams who have opted to use Instinct Studio have each been supplied with a Beta version of the Instinct Studio SDK along with a licence to use the technology for the duration of the competition. In addition, those participants will also receive a high level of support (both remote and on-site) throughout the competition.

"Dare To Be Digital has provided us with a tremendous opportunity to road-test Instinct Studio in a competitive, creative and deadline-sensitive environment," says Instinct Technology's Michaela Gibbons. "Although it's still early days, we've already got a great deal out of our involvement in this event and, from what we've seen, so have those participants who've selected Instinct Studio as their creative tool of choice. We're very much looking forward to seeing the results of all of this creative endeavour and are glad to have played our part in making this competition a success."

Dare To Be Digital will run until Thursday August 17th, at which point the working prototypes will be judged by a panel of experts. Prizes will then be awarded and the results showcased at an awards ceremony on Friday August 18th. A selection of the competition's 'works in progress' will also be showcased at this year's Develop Conference (Brighton, July 11th to 13th) where Instinct Studio will be formally unveiled to the game development business.
