id Software has announced that its back catalogue of games will be made available through Valve's Steam digital distribution system.
CEO Todd Hollenshead said that Steam was "a credit to the Valve" games and "the future of distribution for games." Steam is probably best known as the distribution for the Half-Life PC games, direct competitors of id's Quake and Doom games.
The available titles, which will work on modern operating systems, include Commander Keen episodes 1 through 5, Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Master Levels for Doom II, Final Doom, Doom 3, Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, Quake and Quake II and their assorted mission packs, Quake III Arena, Quake III Team Arena, Heretic, HeXen, HeXen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, and HeXen II.
The games are available for download as single titles as well as in themed packages such as all the Quake I and II titles, all the Doom titles, the three Wolfenstein titles, the two Doom 3 games, the two Quake III games, and the Heretic/HeXen titles.
Prices for the individual games range from USD 4.95 to USD 19.95, with packages in the USD 17.95 to USD 35.95 range. The "super pack," containing every id title available on Steam, is priced at USD 62.95.
