GSM Awards nominees announced

New categories introduced for 2006 event

The mobile industry's global trade organisation, The GSM Association, has confirmed category details and released awards nominee shortlists for the 2006 GSM Awards, taking place in Barcelona on February 14th.

Recognising and rewarding achievement and excellence in the global mobile communications industry, the 2006 awards have been extended to account for the continued convergence between the mobile and entertainment industries.

New categories this year include recognition for advances mobile handsets and devices, marketing and community initiatives, mobile applications for enterprise, mobile messaging and best 'made for mobile' music, gaming, video and sports & infotainment categories. Further new categories have been created to recognise technical developments that underpin the success of the industry.

"The level of interest and quality of submissions from organisations across the world has made the 2006 awards the most eagerly anticipated and fiercely contested ever," commented Rob Conway, CEO and board member of the GSM Association. "We would like to thank all the entrants - with so many outstanding nominees, the judges' challenge to decide final winners has never been tougher."

Celebrating its eleventh year, with over 520 entries, the GSM Awards are an integral part of the annual mobile industry event, the 3GSM World Congress. Award winners will be announced on Tuesday February 14 at the black-tie Gala Awards dinner in Barcelona, hosted by CNBC anchor Ron Insana and featuring a guest appearance by MTV's Entertainment Tonight host, Ryan Devlin.

In addition to the revised and extended awards categories for this year's event, the GSMA is introducing a new Mobile Innovation award, designed to encourage and showcase young, small and start-up companies who are developing new ideas in applications, content and technologies that will drive the wireless industry's future growth. The Mobile Innovation Award nominee results will be announced separately.

The Awards are judged in two phases by an international panel of independent experts. Full details of the judges, an awards category listing and the newly announced awards nominee shortlists can be found by visiting the GSM Awards website.
