Gran Turismo 5 storms UK chart number 1

PS3 racing title takes pole position, knocking Rainbow Six Vegas 2 down to second, Mario & Sonic down to third

The much-anticipated latest edition in Kazunori Yamauchi's visually stunning Gran Turismo series has entered the UK chart at number one, according to the latest data for the sales week ending March 29 from Chart-Track.

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue - so-named because it's effectively a precursor to the full edition slated for release next year, with less content and a lower retail price - ensured that Ubisoft's brief Rainbow Six Vegas sequel enjoyed just one week at the top, pushing it down to second place.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games fell to third place, while Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 jumped seven places to fourth.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock continued its strong sales performance in fifth, while a big marketing campaign for Sega Superstars Tennis seemed to pay off for Sega, propelling the title up four places to sixth.

Meanwhile Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare slipped four places to seventh, despite its continuing popularity online, while the only other new entry in the top ten was Creative Assembly's latest, Viking: Battle for Asgard.

Evergreen titles FIFA 08 and Brain Training rounded off the top ten.
