GLAAD adds Outstanding Video Game category to its Media Awards

LGBTQ advocacy group to honor a game for "fair, accurate, and inclusive" representation at 30th annual awards

LGBTQ advocacy organization GLAAD has announced that it will add an Outstanding Video Game Award to its 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards later this year. This will be the first time the organization has recognized video games in its awards.

The Outstanding Video Game award will be presented to a game with "outstanding LGBTQ-inclusive content" and can be accepted either by a developer or publisher. That content includes "authentic and impactful LGBTQ characters or storylines" and the judges will also consider how much of that content is a seamless or prominent part of the gameplay and world.

To be eligible, the game must either have been released in 2018 or had a substantial content update during the year, with the considered representation included in that content. Major console platforms, PC, browser, and mobile games all qualify.

Nominees will be announced in January, with the awards taking place on April 12, 2019.
