GameStop offers compensation over Deus Ex vouchers

Affected US customers to receive $50 voucher and used game coupon

GameStop has offered customers compensation over its decision to remove OnLive vouchers from PC copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Anyone who purchased the game is entitled to a $50 gift card and a coupon for a free used game with the purchase of two others.

The terms were outlined in an e-mail sent to GameStop customers, acquired by Joystiq, which stated that the company was not aware that the copies would contain vouchers for a rival retail service.

"We regret the events surrounding this title release and that our customers were put in the middle of this issue between GameStop and Square Enix, the publisher of this game," the e-mail read. "And for this, we are truly sorry."

The vouchers gifted those who bought the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution a free version of the game through OnLive. GameStop stores in the US were ordered to open the copies and remove it before they could be sold.

The decision to compensate customers for this action was taken despite Deus Ex publisher Square Enix issuing a statement in support of GameStop.

"As part of Deus Ex: Human Revolution's boxed offering on PC, Square Enix included a third-party coupon," the publisher said in a statement.

"GameStop was not made aware of this inclusion and Square Enix respects the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies."

GameStop is selling a digital version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution through the Impulse download service, which it acquired in April.

The company is also beta-testing a console streaming service similar to that offered by OnLive.
