Former PlayStation and Xbox chief Phil Harrison joins Google

He will work on a new business unit for the internet giant

Phil Harrison has joined Google as Vice President and GM, the games veteran has announced.

He will work on a new business for Google, and will be based at the firm's California HQ.

Harrison is a highly regarded video games executive best known for his 16 years at PlayStation, which included launching the platform in 1995. He held numerous roles at the platform holder, including president of Sony's worldwide studios.

His games career actually started before that, with roles at ESD and Mindscape. Following PlayStation, he had a brief stint at Atari before joining Microsoft for over three years as corporate vice president for the Xbox business. He's also been heavily engaged in the video game investment scene and has acted as a special advisor to London Venture Partners.

Harrison said he can't share anything about his new Google role, only stating that it is an "extremely special opportunity".
