Leading game publisher Electronic Arts is to be added to Fortune Magazine's e-50 Index, a stock index which is designed to act as a benchmark for the Internet economy and includes companies such as Sun, Microsoft and Cisco.

EA will be the first videogame company to join the index, which is described by Fortune as being "the 50 companies that best represent the Internet economy", and is the tech sector's equivalent of the highly respected Fortune 500 list.

The company will replace Overture Services Inc on the index. Several other game publishers would be eligible for consideration for the e-50 Index, but to date EA is the only one to be chosen as a key indicator for the health of the Internet sector.
