EA confirms Mass Effect 2 for PS3

Space-opera sequel coming January 2011; Dragon Age 2 hitting shelves in March

EA has confirmed at its Gamescom conference that critically-acclaimed sequel Mass Effect 2 will be ported to the PlayStation 3 in January next year.

The Bioware RPG generated strong sales on both Xbox 360 and PC this year, and has been one of Microsoft's most trumpeted platform exclusives.

There is no news yet on whether the original Mass Effect will follow suit. Mass Effect 2's save-inheritance system dealt with the potential consequences of actions from the first game, but players without a Mass Effect save game on their hard drive were given a default set of events to unfold.

Mass Effect 3 is now expected to be a multi-platform title, after a period of timed exclusivity for Microsoft.

Electronic Arts also confirmed a release date of March 11, 2011 for another Bioware sequel - Dragon Age 2 - arriving simultaneously on PC, PS3 and 360. Crysis 2 will be released on these three platforms two weeks later on 25th March.

The company's presentation also included the reveal of David Beckham as the new face of EA Sports Active 2, whilst The Sims 3 was given a street date on console of 26th October.
