The Nintendo DS is outshipping Sony's PSP in Japan by almost three-to-one.

The Nintendo DS is outshipping Sony's PSP in Japan by almost three-to-one.

Sony had shipped a total of five million units to Japan by the end of January, according to SCE spokesperson Satoshi Fukuoka, reports Bloomberg.

The latest figures from Nintendo Japan suggest the DS has shipped 14.4 million units in the region since launch in December 2004.

This week Sony's UK boss Ray Maguire confirmed that a redesigned PSP is currently on the drawing boards, with a "smaller, lighter" handheld to be introduced in the future.
