Blizzard is planning online BlizzCon in early 2021

President J. Allen Brack told investors that the cancelled event will return in virtual form at the start of next year

Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that BlizzCon will return as a virtual event in early 2021.

The publisher's annual event was cancelled in May this year, due to the impact of the global spread of COVID-19.

At the time, Blizzard said it was holding discussions to explore how BlizzCon could take place online, "far less impacted by the state of health and safety protocols for mass in-person gatherings."

On Activision Blizzard's earnings call this week, Blizzard president J. Allen Brack said that a virtual version of BlizzCon will take place in "the early part" of 2021.

"We're really fortunate to have a passionate and engaged community that's really looking forward to what we're creating," Brack said.

"We're looking forward to sharing what the teams have been working on for that event."
