Empires and Puzzles wins Best Breakthrough Hit at Google Play Awards

Best Android apps and games announced at award ceremony ahead of Google I/O 2018

Empires and Puzzles has been named the Best Breakthrough Hit at the third annual Google Play Awards.

The Best Breakthrough Hit recognises new apps or games with "excellent overall design, user experience, engagement and retention, and strong organic install growth".

According to Sensor Tower data, Empires and Puzzles from developer Small Giant Games generated $6 million revenue and one million downloads on the Google Play Store last month.

Other games recognised on the night included Old Man's Journey from developer Broken Rules, which received the Standout Indie award for "developers that focus on artistic design, gameplay, mechanics, and overall polish".

Best Community Game, which looks at games "built to connect gamers", went to Episode, by Pocket Gem.

Meanwhile, the Standout Well-Being App was awarded to to Simple Habit and the award for Best Accessibility Experience, which looks at apps or games "enabling device interaction that service people with disabilities or special needs", went to Be My Eyes.

The Best Social Impact award, which cosniders apps that "create a positive impact in communities around the world" went to Khan Academy.

BBC Earth was recognised as the Best AR or VR Experience for "offering highly engaging and immersive experience with optimal use of ARCore or Daydream UI".

Finally, the Standout Build for Billions Experience award for apps or games with "optimised performance, localisation and culturalization for emerging markets" went to Flipkart, and the Standout Startup for new developers that "offer unique experiences while achieving strong organic install growth" went to Canva.
