AppConference - International App Conference & AppJam

48-hour developathon gets under way in Dundee.

8 November 2010

Ten teams will take part in the UK’s first 48 hour challenge to produce the next killer app as part of an event that brings together some of the top names in the industry.

Starting from scratch the budding developers will have to compete over a gruelling 48 hour session (8-9 November 2010), at the end of which they will present their work to some of the biggest developers in the industry.

Dundee College is staging the AppJam, which is part of a three day conference. The event is attracting businesses from across Europe to discuss and learn about one of the world’s fastest growing markets.

The global apps market has exploded over the last year. In a challenging climate many people are now reluctant to spend large sums of money on video games when they can buy a mobile app for under a pound.

The app development market is one of the most important but competitive areas of the creative industries, growing at a rate of 140% each year since 2007. It is expected to increase by 68% per year until 2013 and have an annual worth of over £10 billion.

Andy Mackenzie, Project Manager, Centre for Creative & Digital Industries for Dundee College, comments: “The AppJam is all about creation, knowledge transfer and commercialisation. It offers a fantastic opportunity for participants to meet and work with other talented individuals, and the chance to create prototypes that they can take to market.”

The lucky winners will receive a worldwide publishing deal with Replay Games for the best PC based casual game along with a range of the latest Nokia handsets and a year’s subscription to the online training organisation lynda.com.

The three day AppConference will also look at the creation and development of applications for new platforms such as the iPad, iPhone, Android and Facebook. It promises to explore the issues facing the new generation of developers, creating applications for some of the world's largest and most rapidly evolving platforms.

The AppJam is part-funded by the Interreg Creative City Challenge project.

The international AppConference is taking place at Discovery Point in Dundee from the 8-10 November 2010, as part of the week long  NEoN Digital Arts Festival.
