Amazon game discounting creeps up year-on-year during Black Friday

Call of Duty: Ghosts discount doubled over two years, top 20 sellers were all current generation

Discounting on games during Amazon's Black Friday sale crept up year-on-year, with the 20 best-selling games all titles for current generation systems.

Activision's Call of Duty: Ghosts received a significant price drop, discounted by $15 compared to the $7 of two years ago. However, that discount is a lot lower than the the price cuts Amazon applied to other triple-A console titles.

Average discount across the best-selling titles was $19, up from $17 last year, according to a note from analysts Cowen & Company. For the three Electronic Arts titles in the top 20, the average discount was $23, up from $21 last year.

Activision's Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox 360, PS3) was the best seller over the Black Friday period, with the Xbox 360 claiming 10 of the top 20 titles, the PlayStation 3 eight titles and the Wii two games.

Electronic Arts had six of the top 20 SKUs (Battlefield 4, Madden 14 and FIFA 14 on Xbox 360/PS3), Ubisoft had four (Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag on Xbox 360/PS3, and Just Dance 2014 on Wii/Xbox 360), Activision had three top sellers (Call of Duty Ghosts and Skylanders Swap Force Wii), while Warner Bros also had three (Batman: Arkham Origins on Xbox 360/PS3 and Lego Marvel Super Heroes on Xbox 360).

Black Friday sales are usually a good indication of sales during the month of December.
