3D In Your Face

Two-day conference covering all things three-dimensional to be held next month at the National Media Museum in Bradford.

16 th September 2010

NATIONAL  MEDIA MUSEUM, BRADFORD: 21 ST & 22 ND OCTOBER

It’s been the year of the 3D explosion, with releases such as Toy Story 3 and Avatar transforming the cinematic experience  and breaking box office records, Nintendo unveiling its 3DS and 3D TV set to invade our living rooms this autumn.

Screen Yorkshire and NorthernNet present ‘3D IN YOUR FACE’, a two-day conference, taking place at The National Media Museum in Bradford, on 21 st and 22 nd October 2010.  The ambitious programme, the UK’s first cross-platform 3D event, brings together an amazing line up of leading industry experts across film, television, games and interactive media to unveil the latest 3D developments through a series of sessions, debate and demonstrations  in full 3D.

Mick Hocking, speaker at the event and Senior Group Studio Director at Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios says:

"With 3D Games we are able to both interact and innovate with 3D in ways that no other medium can. Games can deliver the highest quality, most compelling and immersive 3D experiences for the home. They are set to be one of the leading factors in the emerging 3D Home Entertainment revolution. The challenge for us all is to not only produce the highest quality 3D Games but also to get our fans to experience 3D games for themselves, with 3D Games, seeing really is believing."

Emma Cheshire, Head of Industry Development at Screen Yorkshire adds:

‘‘The 3D trend is not a fad – it’s here to stay and it’s revolutionising the way content is produced across all screen media platforms.  Whether you’re working in film, television, games or interactive media – either within a business or as a freelancer or student, you need to find out about these game changing technologies and developments if you want to play a part in the screen media industries of the future’’.

From Streetdance 3D and Avatar to 3D gaming and Sky’s new 3DTV channel, all content producers and platforms are investing in and developing these technologies. 3D has recently taken over the cinema with Avatar, Bolt, Alice in Wonderland, Monsters vs Aliens. Nintendo has unveiled its 3DS and Playstation 3 now supports Stereoscopic 3D.

The conference is broken down into two days, with day 1 (21 st October) focusing on developments across gaming and interactive technologies and day 2 (22 nd October) covering 3D film and TV from content development to production through to post production and VFX.

Confirmed sessions for day 1 (GAMES & INTERACTIVE) include; 3D: The Next Generation in Gaming with Mick Hocking (Senior Group Studio Director for Studio Liverpool, Evolution Studios and BigBig studios, part of SCE), 3D Vision Session with NVIDIA, Crysis 2 in 3D with Crytek, 3D Research Technology ( University of Huddersfield) and a panel session: Is 3D the future of Gaming? Featuring Alex Wiltshire ( Edge Magazine). Day 1 will close with a 3D IMAX screening of Avatar.

Mercedes Clark-Smith , Project Director, NorthernNet comments: “3D is one of many major challenges facing the digital and creative sector. It’s not just a new technology; it’s a new and disruptive way of working which requires new skills and new workflows. As challenging as this may be for small companies, the potential rewards are enormous, especially when coupled with the opening of MediaCityUK in the North. We are proud to work with Screen Yorkshire to in helping to ensure Northern companies are strongly placed to exploit these new opportunities to the full.”
