38 Studios has licensed the BigWorld tech suite for its forthcoming MMOG, currently being worked on by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and fantasy author R.A. Salvatore.

The game is due in 2010 and will also include other media elements as well as the online content, in what the developer calls an "unparalleled online entertainment experience."

"BigWorld provides the most proven, robust and technically solid game engine and toolset available, while still allowing us to be flexible and tailor the technology specifically to our game," commented Jon Laff, 38 Studios' chief technology officer.

38 Studios was founded in 2006 by Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Shilling, and as well as creating an MMO, the company hopes to distinguish itself with other entertainment products including novels, comics, toys, movie and TV content.

"38 Studios is in a unique position in the MMOG market with an exciting project underway," said Gavin Longhurst, VP of business development at BigWorld.

"Our engine and toolset is very flexible, and allows them to use the technology in a very specific way that is ideal for long-term projects such as this. We are thrilled to be working with such a professional and talented group of game developers."

Last December, Electronic Arts veteran Michael Kosenski joined 38 Studios as VP of product development. During his time at EA, Kosenski worked on the Medal of Honor and Command & Conquer franchises.
