Microsoft loosens XBLIG restrictions

Size limits and pricing models relaxed in new year

Microsoft has made some progress towards allaying the fears of those who felt that the recent dash update had sidelined the Indie Game channel by relaxing restrictions on submissions to the section.

The most notable change is the increase in potential size limits from 150mb to 500mb, allowing for much more ambitious and complex projects to be submitted. Secondly, developers can now apply the minimum price tag of 80 MSP to games of up to 150mb rather than the previous maximum of 50mb.

Lastly, individual developers can now release twice as many games to the channel than they could previously - a maximum total of 20.

None of which will count for anything if the games can't get any exposure in the new dashboard

The Indie games are in exactly the same place as the XBL Arcade games and people find those just fine.

Also, when I looked at the store the other day, the featured section had a featured indie games subsection, so it seems they are starting to give a bit more exposure.

The problem of Indie games on XBLIVE as compared to Arcade is that there are many more indie games appearing at a higher rate. Arcade games can have at least a few days of exposure as the most recent titles, giving folk a chance to find them. I've seen moments through last year where quite a number of Indie games where appearing per day causing them to get lost in the crowd.

I don't think the new dashboard makes the situation any better or worse. The new rules in the article sound quite positive but won't do anything to affect exposure. It's simply harder to be seen in a list of thousands rather than hundreds.

Visibility, exposure and promotion are issues largely facing all titles on all digital delivery platforms, no matter what their size, independence status, IP content or whatever. Content, offer and feature saturation hardly helps on the portals (and XBox Live/PSN/Steam etc are all included).

Anybody know why the Indie games are not being offered everywhere where XBLA exists? For instance, in Finland we don't even see the Indie games.

My understanding is because XBLIG are "unrated" (though they do have a peer reviewed rating system that the end-user can see) Microsoft has to go through special steps to allow XBLIG released in a given country which takes extra time and perhaps in some countries unrated games is unprecedented (which takes even more time to get the OK).

I could not find the market place on the new dashboard, and i had a hard time finding the Indie on the old one.

@Martyn, tell me about it. Try getting an indie game to make any headway on the Apple Store anymore without incredible luck and / or marketing.

@Nathan Fouts:

Thank you! I was wondering about it as well. This is probably the case. I doubt if Microsoft Poland is up to pushing the issue through the Polish legislative mess...

The 500mb size increase sounds great!! Music takes up so much space, even when it's compressed. So do even 2D graphics when they're sized for 1080p.
