Play.com prices Xbox 360 at £399

Prominent retailer quotes a specific price and date, with a full game line-up, but Microsoft dismisses the new listing and suggested release date as "pure speculation".

Following the appearance of a listing for the Xbox 360 on the website of Play.com - complete with a price tag of £399 and a launch date of November 29 - Microsoft has told our sister site Eurogamer that it's simply guesswork on the UK retailer's part.

"The stories currently running on some retail sites regarding Xbox 360 launch price, launch timings and launch line up are pure speculation," said a representative. "We have not yet announced any specific launch details."

The listing has been altered since yesterday - the November 29 date has now disappeared from view, and a disclaimer has been added to the page: "The UK price and release date have not been confirmed and are subject to change.

"If the retail price is decreased you will receive the lower price," says Play.

There's still a full list of games up, however, priced at £39.99 each - apparently £10 less than the RRP. Call of Duty 2 is billed as the top seller, followed by Project Gotham 360 and Quake 4.
