Oculus Rift becomes leading VR headset on Steam

Latest hardware and software survey puts Oculus Rift two points ahead of HTC Vive

The steady rise of Oculus has finally toppled the HTC Vive from its top spot as the most popular VR headset among PC users, according to the latest Steam hardware and software survey.

Since August last year, the Oculus Rift has been gaining ground on the HTC Vive, and last month found itself level pegging with Valve's own hardware.

However, based on the latest batch of data, the Oculus now accounts for 47.31 per cent of Steam users, compared to the HTC Vive's 45.38 per cent. Where last month the Oculus was less than a single per cent behind the Vive, it is now two points ahead.

Movements around Microsoft's mixed reality offering were more stagnant, increasing slightly from 5.1 per cent to 5.36 per cent.

The adoption rate of VR technology remains low among Steam users, with only 0.14 per cent possessing an Oculus Rift, and 0.13 per cent owning a HTC Vive.

Based on current trends, the substantially cheaper Oculus product is likely to creep ahead even further in the months to come, but there is no indication that adoption rates will accelerate in the immediate future.
