EA will limit launch sales of Star Wars: The Old Republic

First come, first served for gamers hoping to play Bioware's new MMO

EA will limit availability of both retail and digital copies of new MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic.

What may seem a surprising move is actual an attempt to prevent issues with server capacity and traffic on launch.

"We are limiting launch quantities of Star Wars: The Old Republic to ensure players have a smooth and high quality game experience and service at launch," an EA spokesperson told Gamasutra.

"All versions of the game -- physical and digital -- are available for pre-order on a limited basis only. Once they are gone, they are gone."

During EA's Gamescom press conference Bioware's Dr Ray Muzyka announced that SWTOR was setting new records at EA for pre-order numbers.

The game is currently due for release at the end of the year, but no specific date has been announced.

The news comes shortly after analysts predicted big sales for the Jedi epic.
