Microsoft's console holds onto its lead as the number one console in the United States in 2013

Sony's PlayStation might've outsold the Xbox 360 in September, but Microsoft wants to make sure that people know its system is still the number one selling console in the United States. The Xbox 360 has sold 1.6 million units in 2013 within the US and 80 million units worldwide since its launch in 2005.

September software sales for the Xbox 360 reached $401.2 million, the highest of any console in the US according to NPD numbers. The top five games on NPD's September 2013 chart are all on 360: Grand Theft Auto V, Madden 25, NBA 2K14, Diablo III, and FIFA 14.

November 22 marks the worldwide launch of Microsoft's next console, the Xbox One. The company says preorders for the new console are ahead of Xbox 360 preorders in the same time period.

"Looking ahead to Xbox One launch, we continue to see overwhelming demand for the console with pre-orders for Xbox One selling out quicker than any previous Xbox release; Xbox One pre-orders continue to outpace Xbox 360 pre-orders in the same time period. While we remain on track to honor all pre-order commitments, we do expect to sell every Xbox One we deliver to retail this holiday," said the company in its release.

Wow that's amazing that you managed to cover up the actual news that PS3 finally outsold 360 in an NPD monthly report, with so much spin about MS and there new console.

Kudos.

Are you (and the NPD) saying that the Xbox 360 versions were the top-selling games? Those games are all on the PS3 as well.

Three things. First, they mentioned in this very news story that the PS3 finally outsold the 360 in monthly sales in the US, despite this not being a Sony story. Thats not what I would call "covering up" anything. Second, they also mentioned this in the official NPD report for September 2013 sales yesterday, as seen here:

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-10-17-gta-v-drives-us-console-software-sales-up-52-percent

Third, this entire article is based off of Microsoft's own press release for their September 2013 video games sales, so if you think there was spin than you can attribute it to Microsoft themselves and not GI.biz.

Moving right along, 80 million is quite impressive for a system that was once nothing more than the Wii's punching bag(just as the PS3 was also the Wii's punching bag). Microsoft has come along way in what has become arguably their best system yet with 80 million units sold. If I were going to congratulate them with one word I would simply have to say "Kudos".

You do realize that there is a difference between consoles and handhelds correct? If we were talking all video game hardware than yes the 3DS would be in a far superior lead to the 360 but when talking strictly video game consoles the 360 has been the top seller in the US for the majority of the past three years. And even though it was outsold by the PS3 in September, the 360 has sold more units than the PS3 for the entire year. Which is pretty much what their press statement says. You know, when people actually read it.

@ Paul The full, proper term for a handheld system is a "handheld game console." So no, there is no difference. Handhelds are dedicated gaming devices just as consoles are. They serve similar markets and often directly compete. Both compete for dedicated gamer dollars, not the dollars of the average "mobile" gamer. So yeah, I would say not only are they worth direct comparisons, but they make a BETTER comparison than handhelds to smartphones.

@Nicholas--Like I said, they are calling the 360 the "best selling console" of the year in the US because they are only comparing it to other video game consoles. Handhelds are video game hardware but I still wouldn't classify them as video game consoles. I realize that people will have varying opinions on that but my point of view seems to be the same as Microsoft's point of view when comparing consoles to handhelds. Now if all of their future press releases start refering to the the 360 as "the best selling video game hardware in the US" then I'd agree with you. But until then, I still refer to each one(console and handhelds) seperately.

We are not starting a fanboy war here, are we? Please! This is not Gamespot...

If we are going to speak about sales, then yes: PS3 outsold the 360... This last month and after 8 years.
Quite the achievement (applause) but I could not care less. Got myself a 360 and a PS3 back then so I would not miss a single exclusivity (This not including a quite hardcore PC which I also have).

Cheers.
