New Super Mario Bros 2 digital downloads make up 5 percent of total sales

Nintendo's digital efforts pay off with New Super Mario Bros 2

Though Nintendo has been slow to jump into the digital retail space, the company's digital release of New Super Mario Bros 2 has been marked by president Satoru Iwata as a tentative success. Iwata told the Wall Street Journal [Subscription required] that digital sales of the game made up 5 percent of the total Japanese sales for the title since its launch on July 28, 2012.

"This initial offering going forward, we've gotten a good reaction going," he said.

Sales of Demon Training, also released digitally in Japan, came to 20 percent of the game's total revenue. Iwata believes the stronger digital sales for Demon Training are due to its nature as daily puzzle game.

Nintendo is going to be carrying forward its new digital download initiative on the 3DS and the upcoming Wii U.

It would be even higher if it wasn't 39.99 for the digital version. I would rather pay the 29.99 for a physical copy any day.

Yeah, same in Australia. Retail at JB - $59... online its $69. Physical can transfer between hardware units... digital its locked.

Still, Nintendo will be happy - every digital copy probably earns them 3-4x the profit of physical sales.

I was talking to people about this price recently and it falls into a trap that a lot of digital content does on PS3 and 360. Big retailers (I'm guessing Amazon, WallMart and the like) will only put things on the shelf if say Nintendo themselves agree not to undercut the RRP. That's why it's 39.99 in the UK.

However, once Nintendo start selling the digital versions on cards, then the stores can sell the digital versions at a lower price. It gives the retailer almost 0 stock cost and allow digital sales to be tracked very directly. They just need to get moving on it so I can have Animal Crossing digitally please :-)

Considering that editors and studios get back between 50 and 65% of a title selling price, and that the rest is divided between distribution and taxes, why digital games would be more expansive than physical ones?

There is no box (which is, in my opinion, a bit sad)
There is no stock and production cost
There is no distribution's cuts
There is no way for player to re sale digital game (yet)
There is a direct access to customers/consumers via digital stores (wii, psn and xbox live)

Digital games should a lot less expansive than physical games...
About Mario, the game just came out on the market. Take a look at Battlefield 3, which still ask for $60 on the PSN (The game was release almost 8 months ago)

So my question is: Assuming we're talking about Battlefield, is there a cut for EA and Dice on PSN battlefield 3 sales? How much is it (%)??? Cause it has to be a huge %...
