Beats DS and Game Boy Advance with 52 week triumph

The latest data from Media Create showed that the Nintendo 3DS has now sold 5 million units in Japan, breaking records.

According to a chart created by Nintendo and featured on Andriasang, it only took the device 52 weeks to sell 5 million to consumers through Japanese retailers.

It managed to just beat Nintendo's previous handhelds, its predecessors the DS took 56 weeks, and the Game Boy Advance took 58.

Last week the first pieces of paid for DLC went on sale for the 3DS.

Congrats to the 3DS and Nintendo. This has been an impressive turnaround following the needed price cut and even more needed run of excellent software releases.

It was always about the software. Would you rather buy a console with a choice of games including SSFIV (a good game, but better on home consoles), Nintendogs + Cats, Pilotwings and Ghost Recon: Advance Wars, or would you rather wait 9 months and buy the same console but have the choice of Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Zelda: OoT remake, Resident Evil: Revelaitons, etc. I'm sure the price cut helped massively, but at the end of the day the software has to be there otherwise it's just an expensive way to play DS games.

Anyway, well done to Nintendo - who'd have thought mid-last year this would be happening?

It was always price then software. Even in Japan the gamers don't have unlimited funds and the trend towards getting a bargain seems to be getting bigger over there.

Sony have found out the hard way that their prices are simply too high. This coupled with a rediculously hostile peripheral dive i.e. proprietary memory that should cost about 60% less than they are asking for it and the software that is priced at the comparable home console level. Many now see this as pretty much a suicide pack on Sony's part as they either A) Think their customers are morons or worst still B) Think their customers are not offended by their behaviour.

Congrats to the 3DS and Nintendo. Im happy for them. Lets see if SONY does a price drop for the VITA. I honestly think The thing with the memory card prices messed everything up. SONY's prices are simply too high.

As ever, It's folly to write Nintendo off even when it looks like they may be about to hit a wall.

How many times have they proven this over the last 25+ years?

Regardless of reasons for the turnaround, the feat itself is impressive after the botched launch and the gap between 3DS and Vita will only grow in Japan when Monster Hunter 4 and Bravely Default hit.

Congrats Nintendo, gimmick or not the people responded. Just keep the good developers rolling out good content that matches the 3ds software abilities, its been barely tapped into.
