Michel Ancel confirms long-running project is still in development

Michel Ancel has confirmed that the much-anticipated sequel to Beyond Good & Evil will not be released on the current generation of home consoles.

Speaking at an exclusive Ubisoft dinner attended by GamesIndustry.biz last night, the respected designer confirmed that the game was still in development, but will skip this generation as he and his team continues to work on Rayman Origins.

"It is still alive and we are very far [into] development so we can't go back now," he said. "We are targeting the next generation of consoles."

Beyond Good and Evil 2 was unveiled at Ubidays in trailer format in 2008, and at the time had already been in development for a year and half.

But Ancel and his creative team are currently busy with the next Rayman title, for which they are building a new engine and tools from scratch.

Originally released on PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox in 2003, Beyond Good & Evil was re-released in high-definition in March this year on Xbox Live and June on PlayStation 3.

I was really hoping that this wasn't going to be the case. With the occasional glimpses of Jade in Ubisofts idents during their E3 show it made me think that maybe they might have some good news for the series. I'm guessing that the HD Re-Make didn't sell too well so Ubisoft have decided not to invest and have thrown money at Rayman (which did look awesome) and yet more shooters... but Call of Duty MW3 and Battlefield 3 look set to dominate the market this year...

At least it still exists. Beyond Good & Evil is one of the most worthy games to deserve a sequel I've played... almost ever. Keep at it, lads.

So they effectively expect a new generation of consoles soon, other than Nintendo's. This is going to be a very long development, I wonder if it will be profitable or it will kill our saga forever.

Project Cafe Launch title then,. this has been in development for a number of years already. I wouldn't be surprised if it was playable after the Nintendo Conference.

Its just logical, there's no way they would wait for the next PS and Xbox, the Nintendo Dual it is then, oh dear, I may have just announced what the console is called!!?!?!?!?
