Service remains unchanged as Xbox.com updates - with dashboard to follow

Microsoft's free Xbox LIVE Silver membership is to be rebranded as Xbox LIVE Free Membership, although the services offered under the membership remain unchanged.

The move was announced via Twitter, when European community manager Graham Boyd let slip that he'd been informed of the plan to change.

Newly updated Xbox community site Xbox.com already has the new terminology in place, but the 360's dashboard is slated to update in the coming weeks.

A free Xbox LIVE membership will enable users to download demos, games and trailers as well as customising their avatars. However, a LIVE Gold account remains necessary for anyone wanting to play games online or access any of the secondary services available from the dash, such as Last.Fm, Zune or Facebook.
