Mario Kart 8 and GTA V top European game charts

Did someone send us a 2014 chart by mistake?

You don't have to sell a lot of units to get a No.1 game during the Summer months. Yet even so, this week's EMEA game charts - which features digital and physical data - made for surprising reading.

The No.1 game of the week was Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar's action game is approaching its fifth birthday, and has been discounted on PSN, Xbox Live and Steam, which has resulted in a sales spike. It was the best-selling digital game and the best-selling game when you combine digital and physical together, too.

GTA V on PC was the single best-selling game by platform for the week.

It's nearest competitor? Mario Kart 8: Deluxe on Nintendo Switch. The 2017 port of the 2014 game was the No.1 physical game of the week (on a by platform basis). Nintendo does not share eShop data, so digital is not included in Mario Kart 8's performance.

In the combined chart, which also combines platforms together, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe came third with FIFA 18 at No.2 (although EA's game is, of course, available on all devices).

Another big riser this week is Gran Turismo Sport on PS4, which shot up 112 places in the combined chart, again thanks to some digital discounting. Other big digital games of the month included Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege, Horizon Zero Dawn (also boosted by digital discounting) and Battlefield 1.
