Wii regains Japan hardware number 1

As sales of the PSP fall back after the mint green edition rush

The Nintendo Wii was back on top of the Japanese hardware chart last week as sales of the PlayStation Portable fell back to normal levels after a short burst due to the release of the mint green edition in the territory.

Over 57,000 consoles were sold in the sales week ending March 9, according to information released by Media Create, with the PSP in second, selling just under 54,000.

The Nintendo DS was third, not far shy of 49,000, while the PlayStation 3, although in fourth, saw a reasonable increase in sales week-on-week with the release of software number one Yakuza 3.

The PS3 sold just over 21,000 units, compared to 13,520 the week before, taking it past the 300,000 mark for this year, and within a few weeks of breaking the 2 million barrier in Japan.

The PlayStation 2 sold 10,429 units in fifth while the Xbox 360 shifted 2891.

The full sales breakdown is as follows:

1. Nintendo Wii: 57,068
2. PlayStation Portable: 53,924
3. Nintendo DS: 48,658
4. PlayStation 3: 21,008
5. PlayStation 2: 10,429
6. Xbox 360: 2891
