Sony is about to take the wraps off of its next-gen console

Update: While Sony has yet to say anything other than the announcement will concern the future of the PlayStation business, The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that it's confirmed through a source that the February 20 announcement will indeed be that of the next-gen PlayStation console.

Original story

Sony has released a teaser video for an upcoming announcement on February 20, 2013. The company launched the video with a tweet inviting players to "see the future" alongside a related website with a mailing list sign-up.

Many are speculating that the announcement could be for Sony's next PlayStation console. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter noted that investors are being invited to the event.

"Sony is inviting investors and media to the Feb 20 event; that means console announcement. I'm genuinely excited, although I will be in [Los Angeles]," tweeted Pachter.

The February 20th date puts this announcement just prior to Sony Computer Entertainment America's Destination PlayStation, a media event taking place on February 25-28 in Scottsdale, Arizona. GamesIndustry International has contacted Sony for clarification around the announcement and will update you should we hear back.

Good thinking from Sony. Reveal details about the new machine bit by bit, rather than waiting for E3, and you can get more information across in a clearer manner. If you space out the concept of the machine, specifications, configurations, pricing, launch dates, and software, from this month to E3, then more key information is given more time to sink in. Announce it all at E3, and key pieces of information will be lost in the clamour.

As a consumer I cannot express how keen I am to give Sony my money. If this is not a PS4 announcement I will be in-console-able.

It troubles me that I am such a sucker for hype.

I agree Daniel, as the saying goes 'Don't put all your eggs in one basket' right?

Interesting how the ad has stuff "coming together". Wonder if that's pure coincidence, or a reference to the idea of convergence in the living room.

Either way, looking forward to this.

Man, this has been hinted at for so long... it's exciting to think that something solid might actually be coming soon.

I guess this means all those people saying "Nah, Sony will wait until 2014 to ship a new console" were wrong. Now when will Microsoft schedule their first announcement about their plans?

Meh.

Am I the only one to go meh at the idea of a new PS? Am I too jaded for words? Is interpretive dance the only means of communication for me to express how "meh" I am?

Let's face it, it's all about the games. Hardware releases are very shiny and all that, but some indication of either new IP, or new takes on old IP would be more exciting to me.

Also, if this is a PS4 announcement, that's a long drip-feed of info and marketing until its release - presumably they're aiming for Q4 (Thanksgiving-ish?), and it's only just February. Though I suppose that's about standard, thinking about it. :)

No Morville, I'm thinking meh too. An announcement of an announcement...

I still think 2014 is when we'll see the PS4 hit shops.

I'm just excited to see how it looks, and not about the machine per se. Overall I was completely in love with the playstation 2 looks, both classic and slim, yet all three iterations of the playstation 3 have left me with a bittersweet taste instead of pure sweetness like the PS2.

I'm just really excited to see how it will look, it plays a big role in me buying it sooner than later, as ridiculous as that may sound.

I wonder how many leaks will happen before February 20th. If this really is the PS4 announcement then somebody on some website will leak the info before the actual scheduled time. That always happens.

Not sure you're going to see an actual console box. But you'll likely see what some of the games will look like, as well as an overview of how Sony plans to deliver the content.

And I thought they wanted Microsoft to go first? Sony are the masters of over promising. ..let's see what the event is first.

Eh, it's a reveal of a reveal, maybe. I don't think they'll show the system yet, but we shall see.

They can always do what they did back in the days of yore: Show some "target video" of what will be and get people so excited that they will wait to buy a competitor's offering that might even be available before their very own new console. Saturn and PlayStation, anyone?

@Roland didn't they do that with the PS3 as well. Showed off the Killzone 2 footage which turned out to be not like Killzone 2 at all. Like Michael said
Sony are the masters of over promising.
I agree.

This sounds like investors have pressured SONY into making an early announcement, just in time before the fiscal year ends. I doubt they'll be showing what the controller looks like though. SONY's not good at following up a solid design since they fumbled twice with the PS3 (boomerang and six axis).

That information leak about the new controller doesn't sound all that great considering the OUYA has shown something like it first. All SONY's going to do is probably make the touch pad as big and wide as the VITA's rear touch pad, slap it on a dual shock 3 controller and call it the dual shock touch. Although it has multi-touch, it would still be inferior compared to the GamePad's touch "screen". Most games used multi-touch to emulate dual analogs, I don't see much use for it on a console controller.

The Wii U's GamePad can use the gyro and analog sticks for zooming in and out. It has a resistive touch screen but it should at least be able to do dual touch like the Nintendo DS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6j8yT-Bhsc

Most of the good games are coming out for the PS3 this year, makes you wonder what vapoware or "Toy Story like graphics" they'll be showing.

A Vita-fused PS3 dual shock controller could be a no brainer design

It does not seem like a coincidence that this event is announced just before Sony reveals its latest financials on Feb. 7. They want to give investors something to look forward to.

It's going to be a rough year for PR types, as Sony and Microsoft will probably go back and forth trying to get all the attention, and Nintendo jumping up and down saying "Don't forget about me!" Meanwhile, PR about anything else will have a more difficult time getting noticed.

Agree with everyone so far - Sony could be wary of an early Microsoft next gen release so wish to let consumers know (via these events to analysts and press) that they should wait until the PS4 arrives before ordering. E3 will be another opportunity then further teasers in the fall but I still can't imagine a PS4 launch before early 2014. Furthermore, sales of PS3 have been taking market share from competitors everywhere this last year so Sony would not want to kill this momentum off before the PS3 life is exhausted.

Can't wait ! I guess they will be talking about GOD OF WAR : ASCENSION, THE LAST OF US and certainly the PS4 brand new controller and few other stuff. Major announcements should be kept for E3.

By the way, who is going to E3? :)
